what did they eat?
Their meals were very simple and all sorts of food were usually boiled, smoked, fried or baked. They seasoned their food with either fish sauce (garum) or wine made to a thick syrup thickened with starch. Bakeries were also very popular and 35 were found in Pompeii. They often ate bread for meals and it was made of coarse flour. Lunch was taken at midday and it was a light meal - it included meat or fish and fruit, sometimes with wine. They ate their main meal in the afternoon - it included chicken, fish and ham and would sometimes eat bread dipped in olive oil or stew. Like Americans, it is said that Romans had lots of fast food places meaning they like to eat fast.
